Upcoming Talks

Jen Hamilton of The Village Pottery

Thursday 16th October. 6.30 - 8pm

For over two decades, The Village Pottery has been at the heart of Bristol’s pottery scene. Making functional ware back when the handmade wasn’t quite as favoured as it is now. Founded by ceramicist Jen Hamilton in 2005 after graduating with a BA(Hons) in Ceramics from Cardiff Metropolitan University, the business began as a shop and studio in Clifton Village, Bristol. Visitors could sip on a coffee while watching Jen at the wheel.

Over the years, The Village Pottery evolved to offer lessons, baby feet imprinting, wedding lists and restaurant commissions. Balancing aesthetic and business, Jen has constantly sought to refine her process; making products which are cost effective, sell well but which ultimately bring her joy. Her adaptability as business owner and maker over the years is testament to her longevity.

It is this sense of community which many may know Jen for. For the past 17 years, she has employed and worked alongside other like minded ceramicists, sharing her knowledge and passion for clay. Providing invaluable support, experience and opportunities for early career based makers.

Now based in a larger studio in Easton-in-Gordano, Jen continues to throw every piece on the wheel. Her work is refined during the throwing stage rather than turned, intentionally preserving the handmade essence. A carefully developed palette of glazes—often inspired by colours found in nature, clothing, and interiors—brings warmth and individuality to each item.

Jen supplies both home users and restaurants, including Michelin-starred clients such as 2* Sat Bains in Nottingham and The Whitebrook in Wales. Her work has featured on MasterChef, The Great British Menu, and in Country Living. While the Clifton shop closed in 2018, the business continues to grow online and through select retailers like Prior in Bristol. Jen also participates in local markets and art trails.

Join Jen Hamilton in conversation with Clay Shed director Alice Shields as we celebrate 20 years of business and creative practice.
