The Fundamentals of Glaze Chemistry with Chloe Monks. Saturday 8th and Saturday 15th November
Do you want to learn how to make glazes from scratch and understand the role each material plays in a recipe?
The Fundamentals of Glaze Chemistry will introduce you to the essential principles of glaze chemistry and help you begin creating and modifying your own glaze recipes.
Through a carefully balanced mix of theory and practical exercises, this workshop is designed to equip you with the knowledge and skills to:
Understand the fundamental principles of glaze chemistry;
Explore the properties of raw materials and their roles in glaze compositions;
Calculate, adjust, and experiment with glaze recipes;
Practice weighing and preparing glazes;
Learn about ceramic additives and their effects;
Identify glaze flaws and troubleshoot adjustments; and
Apply good health and safety practices, including kiln protection.
You will leave the workshop with multiple glaze tests to start your personal glaze library. You’ll also gain access to a range of online resources to help you calculate weights and predict glaze behaviour.
Glaze tests will be fired to 1280℃ (Cone 9), so the workshop will focus on stoneware glaze development. Due to the hands-on nature of the course, participants should bring a dust mask and suitable weighing scales. Further details will be provided closer to the course date.
Class sizes are limited to 8–10 participants to ensure individual guidance and a productive group dynamic.
Tutor: Chloe Monks, a contemporary ceramic artist based in Bristol, graduated from the MA Ceramics & Glass programme at the Royal College of Art in 2020.
Level: Suitable for both beginners and those with previous experience of glaze-making.
Duration: Saturday 8th and Saturday 15th November, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Includes: All materials, tools, tea and coffee (herbal and dairy-free alternatives available).
Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Participants must be aged 18 years and over
