Throwing and Turning Porcelain with Jo Davies. Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th April
Join us at Clay Shed for an expert-led porcelain workshop with internationally exhibiting ceramicist Jo Davies. This weekend masterclass is perfect for potters looking to begin or refine their wheel-throwing skills with porcelain.
If you’ve ever been tempted to try porcelain, but have been put off by its reputation for being temperamental, then this workshop is for you.
Through expert demonstrations, hands-on practise and 1:1 guidance, Jo will help you master the techniques needed to throw and trim porcelain successfully. This workshop is designed to give you the confidence and skills to:
Harness porcelain’s unique qualities
Create a variety of shapes, including cylinders, bowls and plates
Throw with trimming in mind for intentional, precise results
Explore multiple trimming techniques, including chucks and batt mates and upright turning
Finish pieces with finesse to achieve translucency and lightness
Day One: You’ll start with clay preparation and wedging, setting a strong foundation for success. Jo will guide you through throwing cylinders, bowls, and plates, emphasising strategies that make trimming easier and more effective.
Day Two: The focus shifts to the often-overlooked skill of turning and trimming. You’ll explore different approaches to trimming, learn to work the right way up, and go beyond simple foot rings to enhance the delicacy, translucency and lightness of your porcelain pieces.
About Jo Davies: A Royal College of Art graduate, Jo specialises in wheel-thrown porcelain and exhibits internationally. She has designed limited edition collections for brands including Mulberry and Union Coffee, alongside bespoke commissions for private clients.
With a maximum of 7 participants, the workshop ensures plenty of individual guidance while fostering a collaborative, supportive environment. True to Clay Shed’s ethos of exploration and sustainability, this workshop does not include firings, allowing participants to take home all works made during the weekend.
Level: Suitable for those with previous throwing experience.
Duration: Saturday 18th and Saturday 19th April, 10.30am – 4.30pm
Includes: Porcelain clay, tea and coffee (herbal and dairy-free alternatives available).
Please wear clothes you don’t mind getting dirty
Participants must be aged 18 years and over
